Conquest

Imagine living in the eleventh century, the year 1066 to be precise. In January of that year, the King, known as Edward the Confessor for his piety, died and left no definite heirs.

Three powerful men claimed the throne, Edward's brother-in-law, Harold, King Harald Hardrada of Norway and William, Duke of Normandy.

Harold was the only one of the three actually in England at the time and the counsel, called the Witan, supported his claim.

But Harald Hardrada landed at Stamford Bridge, in the Midlands, and Harold had to go fight him off. Then he came back to the south to find that William had invaded on the south coast. Poor old Harold.

He didn't really have time to sort out marriage partners for the two royal sisters he had inherited from Edward and that was where their story begins.

When Harold takes the throne, her betrothal to Stephen, a relative of William of Normandy, is dissolved and she is promised to Arthur, a man much older than herself.

She doesn't like it, but has no say in the matter. Jocelyn, her sister, is betrothed to Peter, a relative of Harold, so she has no disruption.

But when Rosalind runs from Arthur's advances, she is captured by the Norman army and that is when she meets a Norman commander who will tear her loyalties apart.
